The BMW Motorsport logo with its staggered semicircles in blue, violet, and red was first used in 1973 on the racing cars of BMW Motorsport GmbH, which had been founded the previous year. It wasn’t until 1978, with the debut of the BMW M1, that the three right-leaning stripes, reminiscent of the letter M, were introduced.
