A piece of jungle in the living room
Epipremnum aureum
The attractive pothos belongs to the Araceae family. Its natural habitat is in the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Australia, but it is also a popular houseplant in our climate. As a climbing plant with aerial roots, the pothos can reach up to 20 meters in height in its natural environment – as an evergreen houseplant, its dense growth and leathery, spotted leaves entwine their way around our windows or shelves. Larger plants are often mounted on moss poles , creating a beautiful, columnar specimen plant. Since the pothos is related to the philodendron, it requires similar conditions in terms of location and care, but despite its tropical origins, it proves to be surprisingly easy to grow .
Easy to care for and undemanding
The pothos is extremely easy to care for , making it an excellent plant for beginners. With its decorative, heart-shaped leaves, it’s a pretty houseplant that thrives in bright and partially shaded locations . When choosing the best spot, keep in mind: the more pronounced the marbling of the leaves, the brighter the location should be. In overly dark locations, the leaves will lose their pattern. Also, make sure the pothos is away from drafts, as this can cause the leaves to wilt and become spotted. Water the plant whenever the top layer of soil has dried out. Reduce watering during its dormant period. True to its origins, this plant prefers slightly higher humidity , so mist it occasionally with lukewarm water. While the pothos isn’t particularly hungry, it’s recommended to fertilize it twice a month from March to August . Repot the plant every two to three years in spring using standard houseplant potting soil.
Its inner qualities are also convincing.
The positive and calming effect of houseplants on the human psyche is now widely known . Whether a small, medium, or large pothos – each plant size has its own appeal and can be positioned differently in a room. But this tropical climber can do much more than just look good. It is one of the most effective plants for purifying our indoor air . Pollutants are absorbed and filtered through pores in its leaves, thus ensuring a healthy indoor climate. This is why pothos is also a popular choice for offices.
