Phlox subulata ‘Atropurpurea’, also known as creeping phlox or cushion phlox, is a classic ground cover plant for sunny locations. This low-growing perennial delights with its vibrant, purplish-red to carmine-violet flowers. Botanically, this rock garden plant is one of the hardiest forms of moss phlox, forming dense, creeping carpets and featuring fine, needle-like, predominantly evergreen foliage that provides year-round structure. The abundant flowering occurs in spring, usually from April to May, often so profusely that the leaves are temporarily completely covered, occasionally followed by a delicate second flush of blooms in late summer. With its carpet-like, compact growth habit, this perennial is ideal for rock gardens, dry stone walls, borders, grave plantings, front gardens, and mass plantings. It also creates striking color accents in troughs and patio containers and stabilizes gentle slopes in sunny locations. A well-drained, rather lean, sandy-humus soil without waterlogging is ideal; short periods of drought are well tolerated, while overly rich substrates can loosen the foliage. Pruning directly after flowering promotes a compact shape and even branching; a light application of fertilizer in spring is sufficient. In full sun, the shrubby character of this low-growing perennial develops its most intense color, but the effect remains impressive even in light partial shade. As an uncomplicated, long-lived container plant and low-growing garden plant, Phlox subulata ‘Atropurpurea’ fits perfectly into modern design concepts, frames pathways and seating areas, and can be harmoniously combined with other spring-flowering plants such as Iberis, Aubrieta, or Sedum. This creates a consistently dense carpet of blossoms with a clear structure and vibrant spring color.
